Investigation and Arrests

The Kerala police have intensified their investigation, invoking stringent charges under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). The accused are aged between 19 and 30, with many having criminal records. Six individuals were arrested on Friday following five FIRs filed in Pathanamthitta district.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has demanded a detailed report within three days, stressing the need for a fair and timely investigation. Similarly, the Kerala Women's Commission (KWC) has taken suo motu action, instructing the Pathanamthitta Superintendent of Police to submit a report promptly. The KWC's release highlighted that the girl was assaulted by 64 people, including at her school and sports training camp.

Role of Child Welfare Committee

The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) became aware of the situation during counselling sessions after teachers noticed changes in the girl's behaviour. They informed the police, leading to the formation of a special investigation team headed by the Pathanamthitta Deputy Superintendent of Police. The CWC also mentioned that suspects from outside the district might be involved.

According to sources, evidence collection is ongoing to identify all those implicated in the abuse. A detailed statement from the girl will be recorded by a woman sub-inspector at Pathanamthitta police station. Her statement indicated that abuse began with her neighbour when she was 13, involving public places like Achankottumala and Chuttippara in Pathanamthitta town.

Community Response and Support

Activists from the National Mahila Federation, led by former MLA E S Bijimol, marched to Pathanamthitta police station demanding arrests. CPIM politburo member Subhashini Ali called for severe punishment for those guilty. She praised the LDF government and its Child Welfare Council for supporting the survivor. "Severe punishment to the guilty," she posted on her X account.

The investigation revealed that the girl used her father's mobile phone to communicate with suspects. Forty individuals have been identified through phone records and a diary in her possession. The CWC noted several suspect numbers saved on her father's phone. Due to the case's complexity, she was referred to a psychologist for further counselling.

The case underscores the urgent need for justice and support for survivors of such heinous crimes. Authorities continue their efforts to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly.
