Kerala Congress MLA Quits Party Post Amid Misbehaviour Row, Calls Actress ‘Good Friend’

Rahul Mamkootathil, Congress MLA from Palakkad, announced his resignation as the state Youth Congress president following allegations of "misbehaviour" made by actress Rini Ann George. While George did not name anyone directly, she accused "a young leader" of a prominent political party. The issue triggered protests from the BJP and the CPI(M)-affiliated youth organisation DYFI, both demanding Mamkootathil's resignation as MLA.

The Congress has launched an internal inquiry into the allegations, according to PTI. Speaking to reporters at his residence in Adoor, Pathanamthitta, on Thursday,

Mamkootathil confirmed his decision to step down.

"The party never asked for my resignation. The actress is my good friend and will remain so. I don't believe she was referring to me. I am certain that I have not done anything unlawful or unconstitutional," Mamkootathil said. He added that at a time when the state government is under pressure from widespread protests and allegations, Congress leaders and workers should not waste their energy on such distractions.

Concluding his press conference, Mamkootathil reiterated that he had not committed any illegal act but was resigning from his post as Youth Congress president.

Reacting to the development, Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader VD Satheesan said that the party would examine the charges carefully. "We will look into the allegations and assess their seriousness. If proven correct, strict action will be taken. The procedure allows him to present his side before a final decision is made," ANI quoted Satheesan as saying.

Satheesan further stressed that the party would act without delay. "If someone raises an allegation, we will take it seriously and ensure appropriate action. There will be no mercy," he added, while noting that no formal complaint had yet been received by the party.
