N S Madhavan, a distinguished writer, received the Kerala government's esteemed Ezhuthachan Puraskaram for 2024. During the event, Vijayan highlighted the importance of Malayalam and the state's initiatives to preserve and promote it.

N S Madhavan Receives 2024 Ezhuthachan Award

Vijayan mentioned some of Madhavan's notable works, such as "Higuita," "Thiruth," "Choolaimedile Savangal," "Pancha Kanyakakal," and "Lanthan Batheriyile Luthiniyakal." These works have greatly enriched Malayalam literature. The chief minister also discussed the introduction of the Malayalam Bill, aimed at safeguarding the language and encouraging its use across Kerala.

Efforts to Promote Malayalam Language

The government is committed to promoting Malayalam without discouraging the learning of other languages like English. Vijayan emphasised that while embracing multilingualism is important, it should not come at the cost of diminishing Malayalam's prominence. He noted that Malayalam is already used for government business in Kerala and expressed hopes for its adoption in judicial proceedings with support from the judiciary.

Vijayan stated that efforts are underway to make Malayalam a language capable of addressing any issue. He believes that with continued support, Malayalam can achieve greater recognition in various sectors. The chief minister reiterated that the state is working towards making this vision a reality.

Madhavan's Contributions and Recognition

Madhavan's selection for this prestigious award was announced in November last year. Besides his fiction writing, he is an active columnist in both English and Malayalam, contributing as a social commentator. His work spans various genres and reflects his deep engagement with societal issues.

The Ezhuthachan Award, named after Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan, regarded as the father of the Malayalam language, includes a cash prize of Rs 5,00,000 and a citation. This recognition highlights Madhavan's enduring impact on Malayalam literature and culture.

The award ceremony underscored Madhavan's literary achievements and the state's dedication to preserving its linguistic heritage. By honouring such contributors, Kerala continues to celebrate its rich cultural legacy while fostering a vibrant literary community.
