Kerala Students Protest Over Class 11 Seat Shortage, Wave Black Flags at CM

On a recent Saturday in Kerala, a protest unfolded as activists from the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) and the Muslim Students’ Federation (MSF) demonstrated against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The protest centered on the alleged scarcity of Class 11 seats in schools across the Malabar region of northern Kerala. The KSU and MSF, student wings of the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League respectively, made their displeasure known by waving black flags at Vijayan upon his arrival at a Kerala NGO Union event.

The Nadakkavu police reported that 12 activists were detained following the protest on Saturday evening. This incident highlights the ongoing discontent among opposition parties in Kerala regarding what they perceive as the state government's neglect in addressing the educational concerns in Malabar. The issue has been a sore point, especially after a tragic incident where a girl student from Parappanangadi in Malappuram district took her own life on June 11. The suicide was allegedly driven by her anxiety over securing a plus-one seat to continue her education.

The Congress party has been vocal in its demand for an increase in plus-one seats in schools throughout the Malabar region to mitigate the alleged shortfall. Despite these calls for action, the Kerala government maintains that there is no crisis concerning plus-one admissions. This stance by the Left government has only fueled further criticism amidst allegations of apathy towards resolving the educational plight faced by students in northern Kerala.

The protest and subsequent arrest of activists underscore a growing concern over educational access in Kerala, particularly in its northern districts. As students and political factions rally for solutions, the state's approach to managing and addressing these concerns remains under scrutiny.
