Kerala Church Circular Challenges BJP's Electoral Ambitions In Lok Sabha Polls

The recent circular issued by the Latin Church in Kerala has stirred the political waters, impacting the Lok Sabha election landscape in the state. Archbishop Thomas J Netto of Thiruvananthapuram, representing the Latin Archdiocese, criticized the alleged attacks on minorities, singling out Christians and accused the current political atmosphere of fostering communal divisions. Scheduled for 22 March, the Church has called for a day of fasting and prayer, denouncing the divisive politics endangering social harmony and democracy in the country.

This announcement follows closely on the heels of the Lok Sabha election dates being made public. From having recorded 147 attacks on churches in 2014, there's been a stark increase to 687 in 2023, per the circular. It aligns with opposition party claims that the nation's democracy is at peril, with fundamental and minority rights under the Constitution being compromised.

In light of this, the circular's timing might affect the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) electoral ambitions in Kerala, notably in converting its dream of a 'Lotus' bloom into reality. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's prediction of the BJP securing double-digit seats from Kerala’s total of 20, now seems challenged. This stance is pivotal, especially in constituencies such as Thiruvananthapuram, where the Latin Catholic community's vote is significant, and BJP has nominated Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar as its candidate.

The circular's issuance coincided with the withdrawal of cases against church leaders and fishermen, who were protesting against the construction of Adani Group’s international port in Vizhinjam, marked by the Left-led government's unexpected sympathies. Furthermore, this circular and the government’s recent course of action might impact elections in other constituencies such as Kollam, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, and Chalakudy. The influence of the Latin Church’s stand on the electoral fate of the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), and the BJP remains keenly watched.

Notably, the BJP has been keenly engaging with the Christian community in Kerala, with outreach efforts including house visits to bishops during Easter and organizing 'Snehe Yatra' during Christmas. The inclusion of a significant Christian leader, PC George, and his party Kerala Janapakasam (Secular) into the BJP fold in January further underscores these efforts. Despite these maneuvers, the Church's recent circular may pose additional challenges for the BJP, especially in securing votes from the Christian community in the upcoming elections.

The concerns raised by the Latin Church in Kerala regarding communal divisions and the safeguarding of democracy and minority rights underscore a pivotal moment in the state’s electoral politics, potentially influencing the voter landscape in key constituencies.
