Kerala By-Election 2024 Underway: Key Developments In Wayanad And Chelakkara

Polling for the by-elections in Kerala's Wayanad Lok Sabha seat and Chelakkara assembly constituency are underway. Voters arrived early at the polling stations to cast their votes. Top Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, making her electoral debute, is in contest from the Wayanad seat, taking on CPI(M)'s Sathyan Mokeri and BJP's Navya Haridas.

Wayanad Constituency Details

The Wayanad constituency includes seven assembly segments: Mananthavady (ST), Sulthan Bathery (ST), and Kalpetta in Wayanad district; Thiruvambady in Kozhikode district; and Eranad, Nilambur, and Wandoor in Malappuram district. The by-election was required after Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat following his win from Rae Bareli.

Polling took place under strict security measures with over 2,500 personnel deployed. An extensive webcasting system monitored the election process live. The constituency has more than 14 lakh registered voters spread across 1,354 polling booths.

Chelakkara Assembly Seat

In Thrissur district's Chelakkara assembly constituency, voting also commenced early at 177 polling stations. The by-election here was necessary after K Radhakrishnan of LDF moved to the Lok Sabha from Alathur. Ramya Haridas of UDF, who won in 2019, is now contesting against LDF's U R Pradeep and NDA's K Balakrishnan.

During the 2021 assembly elections, nearly two lakh voters were registered in Chelakkara. This time around, six candidates are competing for the assembly seat. A mock poll was conducted before voting began to ensure all EVMs were functioning correctly.

The Election Commission figures show that people turned up early to vote in both constituencies. The electoral battle in Wayanad features 16 candidates with Priyanka Gandhi making her debut as a prominent contender alongside Sathyan Mokeri and Navya Haridas.

The bypolls are significant as they involve key political figures and parties vying for control. The outcomes could influence future political dynamics in Kerala. As voting progresses smoothly, results will be eagerly awaited by all stakeholders involved.

The electoral process reflects democratic engagement with citizens actively participating to shape their representation. With tight security and efficient management, authorities aim to ensure a fair and transparent election experience for all voters involved.
