In the recent Jammu and Kashmir elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) a significant breakthrough with candidate Mehraj Malik securing a victory in Doda. Malik, a District Development Council (DDC) member, triumphed over BJP's Gajay Singh Rana by garnering 23,228 votes, creating a margin of over 4,538 votes.

This win marks AAP's first in the region, setting a precedent for the party's presence and influence in Jammu and Kashmir politics. Other contenders in the race included National Conference leader Khalid Najib Suharwardy and DPAP's Abdul Majid Wani, who received 13,334 and 10,027 votes respectively, while Congress's Sheikh Riaz Ahmad trailed at the fifth position with 4,170 votes.

During a rally in Doda, where the AAP celebrated its electoral victory, party convenor Arvind Kejriwal addressed the newly elected chief minister-designate of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah. Kejriwal offered advice and support, drawing parallels between the governance challenges faced by Delhi and the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. "Like Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir have also been made a half state, all power has been given to the Lieutenant Governor. I would like to tell Omar Abdullah that if you face any problem in working, ask me, I know how to run Delhi," Kejriwal stated, highlighting the complexities of administrative power distribution between elected officials and lieutenant governors in these regions. Additionally, Kejriwal expressed his expectation that AAP MLA Mehraj Malik would be given a role in Abdullah's government, emphasizing the party's commitment to serve the people of Jammu and Kashmir alongside Doda.

Following the elections, Omar Abdullah, representing the National Conference-Congress alliance, was elected as the legislature party leader. Last week, he met with J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to stake his claim to form the government, supported by letters from allies. Abdullah hinted that the swearing-in ceremony is anticipated to occur on Tuesday (October 15) or Wednesday (October 16), depending on the completion of necessary paperwork, which the LG indicated could take two to three days. The alliance between the National Conference and Congress emerged victorious in the assembly polls, securing 48 seats, with the Congress contributing six seats to the coalition's win.
