Kejriwal wants Delhi govt to foot his bill in defamation case

Is Kejriwal fighting the defamation case filed by Jaitley in his personal capacity or as Delhi CM?

The Aam Aadmi Party wants the Delhi government to pay the bill of senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani who is defending Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a defamation case. The letter written by Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia to the L-G states that the comments made by Kejriwal were in the capacity of a CM, and hence, the government must foot the bill.

The case in question is the one filed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in connection with the DDCA incident. Jaitley had filed a defamation case against Kejriwal following his comments. He had sought Rs 10 crore in damages.

Sisodia, in his letter wrote that the statements made by the chief minister are in the official capacity and hence it is duty bound that he be provided a good lawyer.

Jethmalani had sent a bill of Rs 1 crore as retainer and also charged Rs 22 lakh per appearance. The L-G has now sought a legal opinion on the Delhi government's demand for Jethmalani representing Kejriwal.
