Kashmiri Pandit Voter Turnout in Srinagar Election Surpasses 2019 Figures
In the latest update from the Lok Sabha elections, a significant turnout of 39 per cent was observed among Kashmiri migrant voters for the Srinagar parliamentary constituency during the fourth phase held on Monday. This marks a noticeable increase in participation from this demographic, surpassing the figures recorded in the 2019 and 2014 elections. However, the process was not without its challenges, as numerous displaced Kashmiri Pandits in Jammu found themselves unable to vote due to discrepancies in the electoral rolls.

Assistant Electoral Returning Officer for Migrants, Riaz Ahmed, provided detailed insights into the voting patterns. According to Ahmed, a substantial portion of the votes, precisely 38.73 per cent, originated from Jammu. Out of a total of 17,240 registered votes, 6,700 were successfully cast. This turnout is particularly noteworthy as it represents the highest level of participation since 1996 when nearly 41 per cent of eligible voters in the constituency cast their ballots.
The day was marked by heightened security measures at special polling stations in Jammu to accommodate Kashmiri Pandits. Despite these precautions, several voters were turned away due to their names being absent from the electoral lists. The issue was attributed to outdated data being used for list preparation, a problem that authorities attempted to rectify on the spot by instructing polling staff to allow those affected to vote.
Comparative data highlights the growing engagement of Kashmiri migrant voters over recent years. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, out of 4,700 eligible voters, 2,584 cast their votes for the Srinagar constituency. This figure itself was an improvement over the 2014 elections, which saw just over 2,000 votes polled. The increasing voter turnout among Kashmiri migrants underscores a rising trend of political participation within this community.
The electoral process for the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat proceeded smoothly without any reported incidents, reflecting a successful execution of voting activities amid challenging circumstances. The efforts to accommodate and address the concerns of displaced Kashmiri Pandits highlight an ongoing commitment to ensuring their inclusion in India's democratic processes.
