Karuna objects 'Teacher's Day' renaming to 'Guru Utsav'

, the DMK chief, slammed the Modi government for renaming 'Teacher's Day' as 'Guru Utsav', calling it a way to undermine the Tamil language and culture. He also claimed that the government was trying to impose

to destroy the culture.

He said,"This morning I read a newspaper report that the Central Government has issued a circular to celebrate Teachers' Day (September 5) as Guru Utsav hereafter. We have been celebrating Teachers' Day for several years. This is

an apt example of hatching a conspiracy to downgrade Tamil language and those who made sacrifices for it's welfare."

In fact, NDA ally and MDMK chief Vaiko has also demanded that the governmeny withdrew the order, saying that national integrity can only be strengthened if

India's languages are protected and nurtured.
