Karnataka updates: Cabinet takes shape, 25 ministers inducted

The 15-day-old H D Kumaraswamy ministry in Karnataka was expanded today with the induction of 25 ministers.

Fourteen ministers are from the Congress, nine from its ruling coalition partner JDS and one each from the BSP and the KPJP. Governor Vajubhai Vala administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers at a ceremony at Raj Bhavan.

Congress' DK Shivakumar, KJ George, NH Shivashankar Reddy and the JD(S) laeders HD Revanna and GT Devegowda were among others who took oath as ministers.Congress MLC Jayamala was the lone woman minister.

With today's expansion, the strength of the ministry has gone up to 27, leaving seven more vacancies to be filled. Kumaraswamy had taken oath as chief minister and KPCC chief G Parameshwara as deputy chief minister on May 23.

The JD(S) would accommodate the lone BSP MLA into the Cabinet. JD-S secretary general Danish Ali told PTI, "We will give due importance to our pre-poll ally, the BSP by giving its lone MLA a ministerial berth." He also disclosed that BSP supremo Mayawati has deputed its senior leader Satish Chandra Misra to attend the cabinet expansion.

The Cabinet expansion would be done in a phased manner. Both parties are unlikely to induct the full strength today as there is still confusion on some of the portfolios. These issues are likely to be resolved over the coming days.

The JD(S) is having trouble in finalising the list. It got 12 berths as part of the arrangement with the Congress. The party would announce its list later today. The JD(S) is likely to induct only 8 or 9 of its MLAs into the Cabinet.

The Congress is looking at ways to quell dissidence within the party ahead of the Cabinet expansion to take place today. Those who would miss the ministry bus would be accommodated as chairpersons of boards and corporations. The party is also likely to elevate these positions to that of Cabinet ranks.
