K'taka MLAs attended Assembly for an average of 25 days a year: Report

Ahead of the Karnataka Assembly elections, an interesting report says that on an average the MLAs from the state attended assembly proceedings for just 25 days a year.

The repot has been prepared by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Karnataka Election Watch based on the RTIs filed in the Karnataka Assembly Secretariat asking for the information pertaining to the performance of the MLAs and the Legislative Assembly.

The longest session according to the report was the 12th one held between February 14 and March 30. In all this session had 26 sittings.

K S Longish of the Janata Dal (S) and Channappa Mallappa Nimbannavar of the BJP have a 100 per cent attendance in the Assembly the report noted. Jyothiganesh and Sanjeeva Mataondoor of the BJP recorded a 99 per cent attendance, the report added.

Out of the 224 MLAs in the Karnataka Assembly, 218 have asked questions on the floor of the House, the report said. The highest number of questions (591) asked was by Congress MLA, N A Harris. Yashvanthrayagouda Patil, an independent candidate was second on this list. He asked 532 questions.

The highest number of questions asked were related to general administration, finance, revenue, social welfare and education, the report said.

The report added that 2,285 were related to general administration, while 2,281 were about finance and revenue. Social welfare came third with 1,516 questions, the ADR report noted.

In all there were 214 Bills that were tabled in the 15th Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Of these, 202 Bills were passed, the report added.

In the Karnataka Legislative Assembly there are 224 seats and the magic number to form the government is 113. Elections are due in Karnataka this year. The results of the elections to be held on May 10 will be declared on May 13.
