Karnataka defers release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu
New Delhi, Sept 28: The Karnataka cabinet today deferred the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. After the conclusion of the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said at a press conference that a further decision would be taken after his meeting in Delhi.
The Chief Minister along with ministers from Tamil Nadu will hold a meeting in New Delhi with union minister, Uma Bharti. Siddaramaiah said that the future course of action regarding the release of water would be taken after that meeting which will be held at 11.30 AM on Thursday.
The Supreme Court had on Tuesday directed Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for three days. However at an all party meeting it was said that in the wake of an assembly resolution, the releasing of water must be deferred.
Siddaramaiah said that at the all party meeting all were of the opinion that it would be better to postpone the release of water. Further those at the meet also said that it would not be right to release since there is a resolution of the Karnataka assembly. The assembly had resolved to use the Cauvery water only for drinking purposes in the state.
