Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah counters 'Mann ki Baat' with 'Vangibath'

Rahul Gandhi inaugurated Indira Canteen in Bengaluru on Wednesday

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah took potshots at Prime minister Narendra Modi during the inauguration of Indira canteen. In a bid to drive home the point that the BJP only speaks but the Congress acts, Siddaramaiah drew parallels between PM Modi's Mann ki baat and Indira canteen.

"For three years now, Prime Minister Modi has been making Mann ki baat, but we will now make Vangibath for the people," Siddaramaiah said in his inimitable style. Siddaramaiah was speaking at the inauguration of his government's ambitious Indira canteen, a scheme that ensures subsidised food for the urban poor.

Despite the event being a government initiative, Congress flags were being waved. It took K J George to intervene and ask workers to stop waving the Congress flag. "The BJP has been accusing us of rushing into the project. What they do not understand is that the poor can't wait, neither can the hungry. For years the BJP government at the centre has kept mum about black money despite holding Mann ki Baat," Saiddaramaiah added.

While the event saw all prominent Congress leaders, no BJP leader, including MPs were seen. While no official statement from the BJP was issued in this regard, leaders from the party have been open about their opposition to the name 'Indira' for the scheme. The Karnataka Cheif Minister responded to the allegations as well and justified naming the scheme after Indira Gandhi.

"Indira Gandhi worked to alleviate poverty across the country. She strived to achieve a hunger-free country. There is nothing wrong in naming the scheme after her," he said. While mocking the BJP, Siddaramaiah referred to Vangibath, a popular south Indian rice based dish with spiced brinjal.
