Kalaignar Kaivinai Thittam: Tamil Nadu's Initiative for Artisan Empowerment and Economic Growth

The Tamil Nadu government is set to introduce the Kalaignar Kaivinai Thittam, a scheme designed to support artisans and craftsmen with a focus on social justice. This announcement follows Chief Minister M K Stalin's decision not to implement the PM Vishwakarma scheme in its current form. Tamil Nadu MSME Minister T M Anbarasan shared these details recently.

Tamil Nadu Launches Kalaignar Kaivinai Thittam Scheme

Named after former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the new initiative aims to transform craftspeople into entrepreneurs. It offers comprehensive support, including credit and skill development, to enhance existing trades and start new ventures. The scheme targets individuals across 25 different trades or crafts, ensuring broad inclusivity.

Subsidy and Credit Support for Artisans

The scheme provides financial assistance of Rs 3 lakh, which includes a 25% subsidy capped at Rs 50,000 and a 5% interest subsidy. This financial aid is designed to empower at least 10,000 craftsmen annually. Eligible applicants must be at least 35 years old and can apply online through the official website.

Minister Anbarasan emphasized the importance of artisans utilizing this scheme for their growth. He stated that the initiative is not limited to family-based traditional trades, promoting broader participation among craftsmen.

State's Decision on PM Vishwakarma Scheme

On November 27, 2024, Chief Minister Stalin communicated with Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi about Tamil Nadu's decision regarding the PM Vishwakarma scheme. The state intends to implement a more inclusive program that does not discriminate based on caste, aligning with principles of social justice.

The PM Vishwakarma Yojana received approval from the Union cabinet on August 16, 2023, aiming to provide comprehensive support for traditional artisans nationwide. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched this scheme in Delhi on September 17, 2023.

Tamil Nadu's approach reflects its commitment to creating equitable opportunities for all artisans. By focusing on empowerment and entrepreneurship, the state seeks to foster sustainable development within its artisan community.
