Justice Sapre to head Cauvery Waters tribunal
The post has been lying vacant for the last 20 years
Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre has been appointed as the chairman of the Cauvery Waters Disputes tribunal. The appointment to the post lying vacant for the past 20 years was made by Chief Justice J S Khehar.

Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal had recently told the Rajya Sabha that the Cauvery Tribunal had no chairman for last several years and both members are above 70 years of age. "Whatever work the tribunals have done, the new tribunals will take it further. It is not that the new tribunal will restart the work from the beginning. Cauvery tribunal issue will not have to go to a new dispute resolution committee. It will go straight to the new tribunal," he said.
Sapre is a sitting judge of the Supreme Court. He was judge at the Madhya Pradesh high court before being elevated to the SC. He is due to retire from the Supreme Court on August 27, 2019.
The SC is hearing appeals by the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu against the verdict of the tribunal. The court had recently said that the appeals are maintainable and could be heard.
