Junior Doctors Demand Action as CBI Faces Accusations of Delaying RG Kar Case Investigation

Junior doctors staged a protest outside the CBI's Salt Lake office, accusing the agency of delaying the RG Kar case investigation. They claimed the CBI was colluding with Kolkata Police to shield criminals. As part of their demonstration, they symbolically locked the CBI office gate at the CGO Complex, demanding a faster probe. A scuffle ensued when security personnel removed the symbolic lock, leading to a confrontation between doctors and police.

Junior Doctors Protest CBI Delay in Investigation

The protestors expressed their frustration with the investigation's progress. One doctor stated, "We are losing hope in the way the CBI is handling the investigation. If this continues, it would be better if they shut down their office in Kolkata." Another added, "Even after so many days, our sister Abhaya has not received justice. The CBI detectives are working with Kolkata Police to protect the perpetrators. We don’t want this type of CBI."

Protests Continue for Justice

Meanwhile, representatives from Abhaya Mancha and the Joint Platform of Doctors continued their protest at Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata’s Esplanade area. They demanded swift justice for the deceased doctor. Around 8 pm, they lit candles near their makeshift stage as part of their Droher Alo Jalan initiative. The protest attracted many people from various parts of the city.

The protesters announced plans to extend their demonstration until December 31. They intend to seek court permission for this extension. "We would like to extend our protest demonstration till December 31. We shall again move the court seeking permission for that," one senior doctor stated. The agitators also formed a human chain at Dorina Crossing.

Legal Developments and Court Orders

The Calcutta High Court upheld a December 20 order allowing doctors to demonstrate. The state had challenged Justice Tirthankar Ghosh's single bench order permitting a sit-in 50 feet from Dorina Crossing at Esplanade from December 20-26. This legal backing has bolstered the doctors' resolve to continue their protests.

Police discovered the body of a woman doctor inside RG Kar hospital on August 9. The CBI has since filed a chargesheet against Sanjay Roy, accusing him of raping and murdering the on-duty doctor. According to the chargesheet, Roy, a civic volunteer with local police, allegedly committed the crime while the victim was resting in the hospital’s seminar room during a break.

The ongoing protests highlight growing dissatisfaction with how authorities are handling this sensitive case. Demonstrators remain determined to seek justice for their colleague and ensure accountability for those involved in her tragic death.
