July 7 National Holiday in India: Will Schools, Banks And Offices Be Closed?
Social media platforms are currently flooded with posts claiming that July 7, 2025, has been declared a national holiday in India. Many people are already making travel plans, booking tickets, and preparing for a long weekend. But how accurate is this information?
As of now, there is no official confirmation from the Government of India declaring July 7 as a national holiday. The claims circulating online appear to be based on speculation, and no circular has been issued by any central authority.

Why the Confusion Around July 7?
The confusion likely stems from Muharram 2025, which marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. This is one of Islam's most sacred months, and the day of Ashura-observed on the 10th day-is deeply significant, particularly among Shia Muslims.
This year, Muharram is expected to fall on July 6 or 7, 2025, depending on the moon sighting. If the moon is not visible on July 6, then July 7 will be observed as Muharram in several parts of the country.
What Happens on Muharram?
Government offices, banks, schools, and stock markets typically remain closed in observance of Muharram.
The NSE and BSE will suspend trading, including equity and derivative markets.
The MCX (Multi Commodity Exchange) will halt morning trading and resume in the evening (5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM).
However, this is not a pan-India national holiday. Holiday observance varies state-by-state, and only those states that officially declare Muharram as a holiday will implement closures on July 7.
It's important to cross-check holiday news with reliable government portals, official press releases, or circulars from your workplace or educational institution. Viral posts or WhatsApp forwards claiming July 7 is a national holiday should be taken with a grain of salt until verified.
No National Holiday Announced Yet
At the time of writing, there is no gazette notification or official announcement declaring July 7, 2025, as a national holiday across India. While it may be a public holiday in certain states due to Muharram, it is not a blanket national holiday.
While Muharram may lead to a public holiday on July 7 in some states, there is no confirmation that July 7 is a national holiday in India. Stay informed, don't fall for fake news, and keep an eye out for official updates before making plans.
