Jual Oram Elevates BJP's Tribal Representation in Odisha with Cabinet Induction

Veteran BJP leader Jual Oram, a prominent figure in tribal leadership within Odisha, has recently been appointed as a central minister in the Narendra Modi 3.0 government. At 63 years old, Oram, originating from Odisha's Sundargarh district, carries the notable achievement of being the country's first tribal affairs minister. This milestone was reached following the creation of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs during the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Oram's political journey is marked by extensive experience, having served both as an MLA and an MP. His electoral history is distinguished by victories in the tribal-dominated Bonai assembly constituency in 1990 and 1995. Furthermore, he has been elected to the Lok Sabha for six terms representing Sundargarh and has held the position of president of the BJP's Odisha unit on three separate occasions.

Despite a setback in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, where he was defeated by former Congress chief minister Hemananda Biswal, Oram showcased his resilience in 2014. In that year, despite the BJP losing 20 out of 21 parliamentary seats in Odisha, Oram secured a win from Sundargarh against BJD's nominee and Indian Hockey player Dilip Tirkey, earning him a ministerial berth in Narendra Modi's cabinet.

In the 2019 elections, Oram once again faced off against Tirkey and emerged victorious with a significant margin of 1,38,808 votes. His victory underscored his political acumen, with Oram himself remarking on his seasoned experience in politics compared to Tirkey's background in hockey.

This induction into the Narendra Modi government marks another chapter in Jual Oram's long and varied political career. His role as a central minister is anticipated to bring further attention and resources to tribal affairs in India, building on his previous contributions and experiences in both state and national politics.
