JMM's Rabindra Nath Mahato Elected As Jharkhand Assembly Speaker
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)'s Rabindra Nath Mahato has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Jharkhand assembly. His election was uncontested as the opposition chose not to nominate anyone. Chief Minister Hemant Soren proposed Mahato's name during a special assembly session, and JMM MLA Mathura Prasad Mahato seconded it.
Mahato had previously served as Speaker in the last term of the Jharkhand assembly. After his re-election, Chief Minister Soren congratulated him on behalf of the ruling coalition. "We had successfully completed the tenure of the fifth Jharkhand assembly under your leadership. You played an important role in strengthening the dignity of the House," Soren remarked.

Speaker's Role and Responsibilities
Soren expressed confidence that Mahato would continue to lead effectively, contributing to Jharkhand's development. He urged opposition leaders to respect public mandates and engage constructively in state progress. The Chief Minister emphasised collaboration for overall state development.
In recent elections, Mahato retained his Nala assembly seat by defeating BJP's Madhav Chandra Mahato with a margin of 10,483 votes. This victory further solidified his position within the JMM-led alliance, which secured 56 out of 81 seats in the assembly.
Opposition's Expectations
BJP leader Babulal Marandi also congratulated Mahato on his election as Speaker. Marandi urged him to pay attention to opposition voices, stating, "The issues raised by the opposition members should be heard seriously. MLAs often raise burning issues in the House but they do not get much importance thereafter."
The newly elected Speaker expressed gratitude towards voters who participated in recent elections. He acknowledged growing public expectations and stressed collective efforts to meet them. "I urge members to forget bitterness that arose out of the electoral competition," he stated.
Vision for a New Assembly
Mahato called for a fresh vision and innovative ideas for the sixth assembly session. He encouraged all MLAs to contribute constructively towards building a new Jharkhand and advancing its progress. Following these remarks, he adjourned the House until 11 am on Wednesday.
The JMM-led alliance returned to power on November 23, marking their second consecutive win in Jharkhand's political landscape. Meanwhile, BJP-led NDA secured only 24 seats in this election cycle.
