JMM Requests President Droupadi Murmu to Address Soren's Helicopter Delay Due to PM Modi's Security
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has appealed to President Droupadi Murmu for intervention to ensure fairness for star campaigners in the upcoming Jharkhand assembly elections. They allege that Chief Minister Hemant Soren's helicopter was delayed for 90 minutes due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit. This incident has raised concerns about equal opportunities during the election campaign.

In a letter to President Murmu, the JMM expressed concerns about a no-fly zone imposed because of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Garhwa and Chaibasa. The letter highlighted that Chief Minister Soren was scheduled to attend an election meeting at Bazar Tand in Simdega at 2:25 p.m., following a meeting in Gudri, West Singhbhum, at 1:45 p.m. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi was set to address a rally in Chaibasa at 2:40 p.m.
Security Protocols and Campaign Challenges
The distance between Gudri and Chaibasa is approximately 80 km, while Simdega is around 90 km away. Despite the Election Commission's (EC) approval for Soren's travel plans, his helicopter was grounded for an extended period due to security protocols for the Prime Minister, according to JMM spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya.
Bhattacharya noted that the EC, as an independent constitutional body, had stated that a no-fly zone would be enforced for only 15 minutes within a 50 km radius for security reasons. However, Soren's helicopter faced restrictions far beyond this timeframe. The JMM believes this situation undermines fair campaigning practices.
Appeal for Equal Treatment
The letter also emphasized Chief Minister Soren's tribal background and his journey to leadership through significant challenges. It drew parallels with President Murmu's own rise from a tribal community to the highest office in India. The JMM urged the President to ensure that all star campaigners, especially those from tribal communities, receive equal constitutional protection and respect during the election process.
The JMM's appeal underscores the importance of maintaining a level playing field in democratic processes. Ensuring equal opportunities for all candidates and campaigners is crucial for upholding democratic values and fostering trust in electoral systems.
