Jharkhand Polls 2024: Former BJP MLAs Louis Marandi, Kunal Sarangi Join JMM

In a significant political shift, former BJP members Louis Marandi and Kunal Sarangi have joined the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) ahead of the 2024 state assembly elections. This move follows closely on the heels of BJP's Kedar Hazra and AJSU Party's Umakant Rajak also joining JMM. The upcoming elections are scheduled for November 13 and November 20, with results expected on November 23.

Sarangi, who previously served as the BJP's spokesperson and was an MLA from Bahragora, confirmed their decision to join JMM to PTI. He had resigned from the BJP in July, citing internal issues within the party and dissatisfaction with its leadership. His resignation was addressed to Babulal Marandi, the BJP state president.

Political Dynamics in Jharkhand

The JMM-led alliance had successfully ousted the BJP from power in Jharkhand during the 2019 elections. The alliance secured 47 seats, with JMM winning 30, Congress taking 16, and RJD securing one seat. In contrast, the BJP managed to win only 25 seats at that time.

In Dumka, a notable political battleground, Marandi defeated Chief Minister Hemant Soren by over 5,000 votes in 2014. However, Soren reclaimed victory in 2019 by a margin of over 13,000 votes before vacating it for Barhait. Basant Soren later defeated Marandi by more than 6,800 votes in a by-election.

Voter Demographics

This year's elections will see approximately 2.60 crore voters participating, including over 11 lakh first-time voters and more than one lakh individuals with disabilities or belonging to third-gender categories. This marks an increase from the voter count of around 2.23 crore in the previous assembly elections held in 2019.

The BJP is eager to regain its influence in this tribal-dominated region after losing power to the JMM-led coalition four years ago. The party is strategising to reclaim its position amidst these changing political dynamics.

Sarangi expressed his discontent with what he described as an "indifferent approach" from BJP leaders despite his efforts to address key issues within East Singhbhum district. His departure from BJP reflects broader concerns about internal party dynamics as Jharkhand gears up for elections.

The upcoming assembly elections are crucial for both major parties as they vie for control in Jharkhand's politically significant landscape. With new alliances forming and voter demographics shifting, this election season promises intense competition between rival factions.
