Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Requests PM Modi, Amit Shah To Clear State's Rs 1.36 Lakh Crore Coal Dues
On the eve of visits from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Jharkhand, Chief Minister Hemant Soren has made a poignant plea for the central government to settle an outstanding amount of Rs 1.36 lakh-crore related to coal dues owed to the state. Soren highlighted the critical impact this financial bottleneck is having on the development projects and socio-economic initiatives within Jharkhand. This appeal comes at a crucial time, as the state prepares for its upcoming assembly elections, which are set to unfold in two phases this November.
The financial strain caused by these unpaid dues is severely affecting various sectors in Jharkhand, particularly education, health, women and child development, alongside initiatives aimed at providing clean drinking water and improving connectivity in remote areas. The Chief Minister underscored that Jharkhand's progress and the execution of essential social sector schemes are being compromised due to this financial deadlock. In a bid to underscore the gravity of the situation, Soren took to the social platform X to post a letter addressed to PM Modi, urging the central government's intervention.

Supreme Court's Decision and Elections in Jharkhand
In his communication, Soren also referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling where a nine-judge bench validated Jharkhand's entitlement to collect its dues from mining and royalty operations. This legal backing adds weight to Soren's request for clearing the dues, which he deems justifiable for the state's development and the welfare of its residents. The Chief Minister's appeal is not only directed at the Prime Minister and the Home Minister but also calls upon his colleagues from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), especially the Members of Parliament, to support Jharkhand in securing what is rightfully theirs.
With the assembly elections looming, where 81 seats are up for grabs in a two-phased election process set for November 13 and November 20, the resolution of this financial issue is more pressing. The counting of votes is scheduled for November 23, marking a pivotal moment for Jharkhand's political landscape. Soren's plea thus sets a tone of urgency, emphasizing the critical need for the central government to act swiftly to alleviate the financial constraints hampering the state's development and ensuring the welfare of its people.
In conclusion, Chief Minister Hemant Soren's earnest appeal to the central government to release the Rs 1.36 lakh-crore coal dues to Jharkhand underscores a significant hurdle in the state's path towards development and progress. As Jharkhand gears up for its assembly elections, the resolution of this fiscal challenge is crucial for the state's future, highlighting the intertwined nature of governance, justice, and socio-economic development.
