Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024: Key Constituencies To Watch

The 81-member Jharkhand Assembly is gearing up for elections, set to unfold in two stages on November 13 and November 20. This election sees the state's 2.6 crore voters, split almost evenly between 1.3 crore million men and 1.29 crore women, ready to cast their ballots.

Notably, the youth vote is strong, with 66.84 lakh voters aged between 20 and 29, including 11.84 crore first-time voters aged 18 and 19, poised to make their voices heard.

Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024 Key Constituencies To Watch

In the 2019 Assembly elections, the Mahagathbandhan, a coalition comprising the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), emerged victorious in 44 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 30 constituencies. The dynamics of this election are closely watched, given the historical context and the distribution of power among the various political entities vying for control.

Key Constituencies and Candidates to Watch

One of the pivotal seats in this election is Barhait, where incumbent Chief Minister Hemant Soren of the JMM is contesting. The BJP has nominated Gamaliyan Hembrom to challenge Soren. Back in 2019, Soren secured the seat with 73,725 votes, surpassing his closest competitor, Simon Marandi of the BJP, by a significant margin.

Another crucial contest is in Gandey, with Hemant Soren's wife, Kalpana Soren, representing the JMM, and Muniya Devi running on the BJP ticket. Kalpana Soren's entry into the race follows her victory in a 2024 assembly by-election, where she received 109,827 votes, defeating BJP's Dilip Verma.

In Dumka, a Scheduled Tribes (ST) seat, the competition sees Hemant Soren's brother Basant Soren on the JMM ticket going up against Sunil Soren from the BJP. Basant Soren managed to outpace BJP's Lois Marandi in the 2020 by-election, marking a significant win.

Ranchi presents a battleground where JMM's Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji challenges BJP's CP Singh, a stronghold for the BJP where Singh has won six times. Maji's attempt to unseat Singh in the last assembly election saw her providing stiff competition, though Singh ultimately won by over 5,000 votes.

In Lohardaga, a constituency reserved for Scheduled Tribes and of significant political importance due to its substantial tribal population, the Congress has fielded Rameshwar Oraon against Niru Shanti Bhagat of the BJP. Oraon's victory in 2019 marked a significant moment for the Congress party in the region.

The Dhanwar seat, located in the Giridih district and part of the Koderma Lok Sabha constituency, sees incumbent MLA Babulal Marandi of the BJP facing off against JMM's Niazamuddin Ansari. Marandi, who joined the BJP in 2019, successfully contested the seat as part of the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Democratic), defeating Laxman Prasad Singh of the BJP by a margin of 17,550 votes.

With the stage set for an engaging electoral battle, the outcomes in these key constituencies could significantly influence the political landscape in Jharkhand. The elections not only reflect the immediate political aspirations of the state's population but also the broader trends and shifts within Indian politics at large.
