Jharkhand Assembly Election 2024: Key Issues In Chhatarpur Assembly Constituency

As the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections approach, the Chhatarpur assembly constituency stands out due to its unique challenges and political history. Established in 1977, this constituency has seen various representatives over the years, with the Congress winning three times and the BJP securing victories twice. Currently, irrigation and migration are the two pressing issues affecting the residents of Chhatarpur, as reported by Jagran.

Political Landscape and Historical Background

Jharkhand Assembly Election 2024

Chhatarpur assembly constituency comprises four blocks: Chhatarpur, Patan, Padwa, and Naudiha. Reserved for Scheduled Castes, the seat has a rich political legacy. Zorawar Ram was the first MLA elected from Chhatarpur in 1977. Over the years, Radhakrishna Kishore has emerged as a prominent figure, holding the MLA position five times between 1980 and 2014, representing various parties, including Congress and BJP. Pushpa Devi from the BJP currently holds the seat, having won in the 2019 elections, according to Jagran.

Key Issues: Irrigation and Migration

Despite the political shifts, residents continue to grapple with significant problems. The lack of irrigation facilities remains a critical concern for local farmers who often depend on rainwater for their crops. Additionally, many villagers are migrating to seek better employment opportunities elsewhere, driven by inadequate local infrastructure and services.

Vijay Ram, the RJD candidate who came second in the 2019 elections, highlighted the deteriorating conditions in Chhatarpur. He criticized the incumbent MLA for neglecting essential infrastructure, such as roads and medical services. He pointed out that the roads in the constituency are in poor condition, while the medical and electricity systems have collapsed, forcing people to leave their homes in search of jobs, as per media reports.

Development Efforts by Current MLA

In contrast, Pushpa Devi claims significant strides have been made in developing the constituency. She stated that drinking water facilities, irrigation projects, and road networks have been improved. Under her leadership, approximately 300 kilometers of roads have been repaired, and efforts to grant Chhatarpur district status are underway.

Devi emphasized the progress made in areas that had previously seen little development over the last 25 years, claiming that the last few years have witnessed considerable improvement. However, critics argue that the promises made during election campaigns remain unfulfilled, leaving residents frustrated, as per media reports.

Local Perspectives and Community Sentiment

Local professor Adyanand Jha criticized the lack of actionable initiatives in the constituency despite its potential. He lamented the neglect of projects like the Auranga Project, which has seen substantial investments but lacks completion. Jha pointed out the abundant natural resources in the area, including bauxite, and the availability of land for small industries, yet no significant efforts have been made by elected representatives to harness these opportunities.

As the election date approaches, the Chhatarpur assembly constituency is poised to play a crucial role in shaping Jharkhand's political landscape. The candidates' ability to address the pressing issues of irrigation and migration will likely be pivotal in securing the votes of the constituents.
