JD(S) To Ally With BJP In Lok Sabha Elections 2024?

The Janata Dal Secular (JDS), reeling from its dismal performance in the recent Karnataka assembly election, is now reportedly considering an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Former Prime Minister and JDS chief HD Deve Gowda hinted on Tuesday that his party might distance itself from the Grand Alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Gowda highlighted that numerous parties have had past associations with the BJP, indirectly implying that his party might explore new political avenues.

During a press interaction, Deve Gowda said,"While I can delve into the country's politics at length, what purpose would it serve? Show me one party that has not had any association with the BJP, either directly or indirectly. Certain Congress leaders may say otherwise, but they themselves had engaged with Karunanidhi (DMK patriarch), who supported the BJP for six years. Many Congress leaders have also joined hands with the BJP for political gains, and this is evident in Karnataka as well. Having experienced the political landscape as a Prime Minister, Chief Minister, and Member of Parliament, I choose not to engage in such discussions."

Gowda's response comes after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's attempts to forge an anti-BJP front on the national stage.

When questioned about the possibility of the JD(S) forming an alliance with the BJP for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the former Prime Minister opted to refrain from offering a direct response. He said, "Ascertaining who is communal and who is not communal is beyond my knowledge. Firstly, the definition of communal and non-communal can be broadened, expanding the scope further..."

"Our karyakartas are our strength and we hope to strengthen the party," Gowda said, adding that the party was preparing to face the taluk and zilla panchayat elections and BBMP polls before the Parliament elections.''

Drawing attention to neighboring states such as Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, Gowda cited the strength of regional parties and expressed a commitment to empowering the youth within the JD(S). He said that the party's determination to bolster its presence by harnessing the energy and potential of younger generations.

As the JDS contemplates its future political strategy, the possibility of an alliance with the BJP looms large, potentially reshaping the political landscape in Karnataka and impacting the national political scenario ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
