Nitish Kumar on Wednesday resigned as Bihar's Chief Minister, ending the two-year-long Mahagathbandhan or grand alliance which included his party, RJD and the Congress. The decision to quit was taken by Kumar at a meeting of JDU MLAs on Wednesday evening.

The MLAs reportedly endorsed his decision to quit. This development will only widen the rift between the two parties. Talking to media after his resignation, Kumar said his decision to step down is in the interest of Bihar. Kumar went to Raj Bhawan and tendered resignation Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi.

"I asked him many times to explain on charges against him. We tried our best to carry forward the Grand alliance. But, the situation deteriorated so much that i could not continue," he told media after resigning.

"My commitment is towards people and that cannot be fulfilled under present circumstances," he added.

The situation had become increasingly difficult for Nitish to continue after Tajashwi, who is facing graft charges, refused to step down.

Reports suggest that BJP is set to hold a meeting on Wednesday evening and may lend outside support to Nitish. JD (U) has 71 seats and BJP has 53 seats in the Bihar Assembly. If BJP decides to support Nitish then they will have 124 seats in the 243 seat Bihar Assembly.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav had earlier on Wednesday said that Nitish never asked for Tejashwi's resignation, claiming that there is no crisis in Bihar's grand alliance.

Reports, however, suggested that Lalu was in fact worried that Tejashwi Yadav could be sacked by Nitish Kumar.

The RJD chief earlier brushed aside reports of break up in the current alliance with the JD (U). He told media, "We have formed the grand alliance, made Nitish CM. Why will we break the alliance?"

As the friction between the alliance partners has reached the zenith over the resignation of deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav, it looks like both Lalu and Nitish would decide with their MLAs their future course of action during the meetings.

While JD (U) chief and Bihar CM Nitish wants his deputy to resign over corruption allegations, the RJD chief Lalu once again stated recently that Tejashwi, his son, won't leave the post. The MLAs of the Congress, also part of the coalition government in the state, will be part of the meeting hosted by the RJD.
