NCP (SP) Leader Jayant Patil Consults with Congress' Prithviraj Chavan on Satara Seat

Mumbai, Mar 31 - In a significant political development, senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan revealed that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is actively working towards resolving the ongoing deadlock concerning the Sangli and two other Lok Sabha constituencies. This announcement came shortly after a crucial meeting with Maharashtra NCP SP chief Jayant Patil in Karad, sparking widespread interest in the political circles.

Consultation on Satara Seat

The importance of this closed-door meeting was underscored by the recent decision of Shrinivas Patil, the sitting NCP SP Member of Parliament from Satara, to not contest the upcoming elections due to health concerns. Prithviraj Chavan, who serves as the MLA from Karad South constituency, emphasized that the decision regarding the Satara Lok Sabha seat falls under the purview of NCP SP, with Sharad Pawar having the final say on the candidate selection.

Addressing the media in Karad, Chavan refrained from discussing proposals by some Congress leaders for 'friendly fights' in seats currently under dispute with MVA allies. "Don't talk about friendly fights," he stated, focusing instead on the efforts to identify a suitable and strong candidate for Satara. He maintained discretion about the specifics of his conversation with Jayant Patil, adhering to the principle that discussions held behind closed doors should not be made public.

When probed about whether he was being considered as a candidate for Satara, Chavan reiterated that it is for Sharad Pawar to decide, given that the constituency is allocated to NCP SP. It is noteworthy that Chavan has previously represented Satara in Parliament during the 1990s but was defeated by Shrinivas Patil in 1999 following Sharad Pawar's departure from Congress and the establishment of the Nationalist Congress Party. Since then, NCP has consistently fielded candidates from Satara.

This recent meeting between Prithviraj Chavan and Jayant Patil highlights the ongoing strategic deliberations within MVA as they navigate through internal challenges and prepare for upcoming electoral contests. The focus remains on presenting a united front and selecting candidates who can effectively represent their constituencies at the national level.
