Jayant Patil Suggests Stepping Down as Maharashtra NCP (SP) Chief Amid Calls for New Leadership

Jayant Patil, president of the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Maharashtra unit, hinted at resigning during an event in Pune. This announcement came amid speculation about a potential merger between two NCP factions and upcoming local body elections. The event marked the NCP's 26th foundation day, with party chief Sharad Pawar present.

Patil Hints at Resignation from NCP (SP)

Patil emphasised the need for new leadership within the party. "Pawar Saheb gave me a lot of opportunities. I was entrusted with the responsibility for seven years. However, it is important for the party to give a chance to new faces now," he stated. His words prompted an emotional response from party workers who urged him to reconsider.

NCP Leadership Transition

Sharad Pawar assured party members that Patil's proposal would be thoroughly discussed among senior leaders before any decision is made. "Jayant Patil has expressed his desire to me that new faces should get the opportunity. You and I should stand by him," Pawar said, highlighting the importance of collective decision-making.

Rohit Pawar, an NCP SP MLA and Sharad Pawar's grand nephew, commented on the leadership transition. He suggested that someone with a long-standing association with the party and a humble background should take over as state unit chief. Despite rumours of a turf war with Patil, Rohit clarified he was not interested in leading the state unit.

Patil's Political Journey

Jayant Patil has been a staunch loyalist of Sharad Pawar since the NCP's inception. He remained loyal even after Ajit Pawar's rebellion in 2023. Patil has represented Islampur in the Maharashtra legislative assembly for over three decades and held various ministerial roles, including Water Resources and Rural Development.

In 2018, Patil became the state president of the undivided NCP, succeeding Sunil Tatkare. During his tenure, he retained his legislative seat in 2014 when NCP won only 41 seats. In 2019, under Uddhav Thackeray's leadership, Shiv Sena allied with NCP and Congress to form a government.

Recent Election Outcomes

The 2024 assembly elections saw Ajit Pawar's faction of NCP winning 41 seats, while Sharadchandra Pawar's group secured just 10 seats. In contrast, during the 2019 elections, BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena 56, NCP 54, and Congress 42.

Patil expressed gratitude towards Sharad Pawar and party members for their support over the years. "This party belongs to Pawar Saheb, and hence, he should take an appropriate decision. We all have a long journey ahead," he said emotionally.
