RK Nagar Assembly bypoll: Jayalalithaa to file nomination on Friday
Chennai, June 5: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa may file her nomination papers on Friday for June 27 by-elections. The AIADMK chief will contest the by-elections from Chennai's Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly constituency.
Jayalalithaa appeal: How Karnataka will fight in Supreme Court
It is being said that the election is just a formality for Jayalalithaa as major Opposition party DMK has decided to keep away from the contest. Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly seat was recently vacated by AIADMK lawmaker P Vetrival.
It is mandatory for a candidate to be elected from a seat within six months of taking over the Chief Ministership. On May 23, after O Panneerselvam stepped down as the Tamil Nadu chief minister, Jayalalithaa took over the post.
Earlier, on May 11, the Karnataka High Court had acquitted Jayalalithaa and all the other accused in the disproportionate assets case.
Jayalalithaa was disqualified as a lawmaker after a Bangalore court found her guilty in a corruption case in September 2014.
The counting of by-elections will take place on June 30.
