Jayalalithaa appeal verdict on May 11, bail plea on May 12

Bengaluru, May 8: Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is expected to have a hectic week legally with two important cases coming up on May 11 and 12. While the Karnataka High Court is expected to deliver its verdict in her appeals case on May 11, the Supreme Court will hear the case relating to her bail on May 12.

While the indication is that the verdict in the appeal will be delivered on May 11th by Justice C R Kumaraswamy, the cause list of the Karnataka High Court is yet to be updated.

Several advocates associated with the case informed Oneindia that the verdict is most likely to come up on May 11th.

Special sitting:

Since the court is on vacation, there would be a special sitting of the High Court which will be convened to deliver the verdict in the appeals case. Justice Kumaraswamy who has been resigned to his chamber preparing the verdict will have to convene a special sitting on May 11th in order to deliver the verdict.

The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu while hearing her bail plea last month had directed that the matter be completed by May 12th. The same bench will hear her bail plea on May 12th as the matter has been listed for that date.

The appeal by Jayalalithaa:

The Karnataka High Court which had heard the appeal filed by Jayalalithaa and others had reserved its orders last month. However there was drama with the Supreme Court striking down the appointment of Bhavani Singh as the Special Public Prosecutor in the case.

The Supreme Court had also allowed the Karnataka government and DMK leader Anbazhagan to file their written statements in the case. Both had filed their written statements last week and had sought for upholding her conviction. The trial court had sentenced her to four years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore.
