Jammu & Kashmir: Tourist Places In Pahalgam To Reopen From June 17, Announces JK LG Manoj Sinha

Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, has declared that several tourist attractions across the Union Territory will gradually reopen from June 17, 2025. This decision follows a security review after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 fatalities. The reopening aims to restore normalcy before the Amarnath Yatra.

In a social media post on platform X, LG Sinha stated, "I've ordered reopening of some of the tourist spots in Kashmir and Jammu Divisions, which were temporarily closed as precautionary measures. Betab Valley & Parks in Pahalgam Market, Verinag Garden, Kokernag Garden and Achabal Garden to be reopened from 17th June."

Security Assessments Influence Decisions

During a press briefing, LG Sinha elaborated that the decision was influenced by comprehensive security evaluations conducted by the Divisional Commissioner and senior police officials. He mentioned that after April 22, certain tourist locations were shut for safety reasons. Based on reports from these authorities, spots like Betab Valley and parks in Pahalgam market area will reopen.

Additionally, major parks in Srinagar city such as Badamwari Park, Duck Park, and Taqdeer Park are set to welcome visitors again on June 17. These openings are part of a phased approach to ensure safety while reviving tourism.

Gradual Reopening in Jammu Region

The Jammu region will also see a gradual reopening of its tourist sites following further security reviews. Locations like Sarthal and Dhaggar in Kathua, Devi Pindi, Siyad Baba, and Sula Park in Reasi will open progressively. Guldanda and Jai Valley in Doda along with Pancheri in Udhampur are also included in this phased plan.

During his visit to Pahalgam, LG Sinha met with various stakeholders including MLAs and tour operators. He assured them that restrictions on other tourist destinations would be lifted progressively based on ongoing security assessments to ensure visitor safety.

Reviving Tourism Before Amarnath Yatra

The reopening initiative is part of a broader strategy by the UT administration to revive tourism ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra. This pilgrimage attracts lakhs of devotees each year. Over the past few years, there has been an increase in participants for this event.

"We have enhanced facilities, increased accommodation capacity, and upgraded infrastructure to ensure a seamless pilgrimage," stated LG Sinha. He added that robust security arrangements have been implemented by J&K Police and CRPF for the event.

Tensions Following Terror Attack

The April 22 terrorist attack at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam led to significant tensions between India and Pakistan. The attack claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 targeting terror launchpads across Pakistan.

Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling and attempted drone incursions. However, India's coordinated strikes targeted military installations including radar centres at Pakistani airbases. A temporary stand-off ensued but hostilities ceased following mutual understanding reached on May 10.
