Peace Returns to Jammu & Kashmir with Zero Stone Pelting, Strikes in 2023

Jammu and Kashmir has seen a complete stop in stone pelting incidents and strikes in the valley, according to data shared by the Union Home Ministry on Monday. In 2023, no incidents of stone pelting or strikes were reported, showing a 100 per cent drop since 2010, when 2,654 incidents of stone pelting and 132 strikes were reported, the data said.

J&K Peaceful Post-Article 370

The fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir within India, was marked on Monday. On August 5, 2019, the Centre also enacted the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, splitting the former state into two Union territories: Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Significant Drop in Terror Incidents

There has been a notable decrease in terror incidents since the BJP government assumed power in 2014. The region saw a 69 per cent reduction in such events. From June 2004 to May 2014, during the UPA government, there were 7,217 terror incidents resulting in 2,829 civilian and security personnel deaths. Between June 2014 and July 31, 2024, this number dropped to 2,263 incidents with 944 fatalities.

Security personnel deaths have also decreased significantly. During the UPA era, 1,060 security personnel died in terror attacks. Under the BJP government, this number fell by 44 per cent to 591 deaths. The data highlights a substantial improvement in security conditions.

Government's Multi-Pronged Strategy

The government has implemented a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and other measures to improve security and quality of life in Jammu and Kashmir. Officials stated that efforts include de-radicalisation initiatives, cracking down on terror financing through asset seizures and bans on anti-national organisations.

A multi-pronged strategy has been employed to prevent infiltration. This includes multi-layered deployment, fencing, technology use, monitoring of UAPA cases through qualitative disposal efforts, and enhancing the counter-insurgency grid by prioritising Jammu and Kashmir Police in all operations.

Impact on Citizens' Lives

The crackdown on terror has led to significant improvements in citizens' lives. Schools are now functional, tourism has surged to a record figure of 2.11 crore visitors, and income generation for locals has increased. The successful G-20 tourism group meeting in Srinagar is one example of these positive changes.

In addition to these developments, the Amarnath Yatra saw 4.5 lakh pilgrims successfully participating in 2023. After a gap of 34 years, the Muharram procession was allowed on its traditional route in Srinagar with nearly 40,000 participants.

Election Peacefulness

Elections across all five parliamentary constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir were held peacefully with record voter turnout. This peaceful conduct of elections further underscores the improved security situation in the region.

The government has also acted to restrict terror glorification by implementing curbs on public funerals for terrorists. Measures have been taken against alleged terrorists within the bar council and those supporting terrorism have been barred from government contracts.

The focus on modernising and strengthening security equipment has been crucial. Security agencies now target the entire terror ecosystem with enhanced strategies.

The government's steps have brought about a marked improvement in security and quality of life for people in Jammu and Kashmir. These efforts continue to be a top priority for officials aiming to sustain peace and development in the region.
