Jammu & Kashmir Authorities Review Preparedness for Monkeypox
Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have taken steps to prepare for Monkeypox, despite no cases being reported in the region. Health Secretary Syed Abid Rasheed Shah led a meeting to discuss readiness in light of the World Health Organization's recent declaration of Monkeypox as an emergency.

Proactive Measures and Vigilance
Shah instructed all stakeholders to adopt proactive measures to ensure complete preparedness. Institutions across Jammu and Kashmir were told to maintain high vigilance for any potential emergencies. He also directed heads of departments to conduct mock drills and provide training on logistics and transportation related to possible scenarios.
Isolation Wards and Testing Centres
The Health Secretary mandated that isolation wards be set up in all health facilities. Additionally, he ordered the activation of testing, treating, and contact tracing centres for the Monkeypox virus if necessary. This includes reviewing stock levels of consumables, disposables, and drugs to ensure readiness at the grassroots level.
Shah emphasised the importance of being prepared for any situation that may arise. "All institutions must be ready to handle any exigency," he said. This directive aims to ensure that public health agencies can respond swiftly and effectively if a case is detected.
The meeting underscored the need for comprehensive training for health officials. This includes understanding logistics and transportation requirements in potential Monkeypox situations. The goal is to ensure that all health personnel are well-prepared and equipped to manage any challenges.
In summary, Jammu and Kashmir's health authorities are taking significant steps to prepare for Monkeypox. By maintaining vigilance, conducting mock drills, setting up isolation wards, and ensuring adequate supplies, they aim to protect public health in the Union Territory.
