Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections: 23 Officials Suspended, 6 Employees Disengaged For MCC Violations

As the third and final phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections approaches, significant disciplinary actions have been taken against government employees for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). In a move aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness during the electoral process, authorities have suspended 23 government officials and disengaged six ad-hoc employees for participating in election campaigning.

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Jammu and Kashmir, P.K. Pole, announced the suspensions, highlighting the importance of adhering to electoral guidelines. "Taking cognizance of the participation of government employees in election campaigning and related political activities, 23 officials were suspended, and six contractual and ad-hoc employees were disengaged for violating MCC guidelines," Pole stated.

In addition to the immediate suspensions, another 20 employees have been transferred to different tehsils or districts following complaints regarding their partisan conduct. This decisive action reflects the Election Commission's commitment to maintaining a level playing field during the elections.

Ongoing Campaign Dynamics

The intense campaigning leading up to this final phase concluded on Sunday evening, with major political parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, National Conference (NC), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) actively engaging in debates on critical issues. Topics such as Article 370, terrorism, relations with Pakistan, and reservation policies have dominated discussions as candidates strive to sway voters.

The voting for this crucial phase, covering 40 assembly segments across seven districts-Jammu, Udhampur, Samba, and Kathua in the Jammu region, and Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara in North Kashmir-is set for October 1. The electoral fate of 415 candidates, including prominent figures like former Deputy Chief Ministers Tara Chand from Congress and Muzaffar Baig, hangs in the balance.

Previous Violations and Suspensions

This action against government employees follows a similar pattern observed during the second phase of elections, where 21 officials were suspended and five ad-hoc and casual labourers were disengaged for campaign-related activities. These measures underline the seriousness with which electoral authorities are treating MCC violations, aiming to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

As the final voting day approaches, all eyes will be on Jammu and Kashmir, where the outcomes will not only determine the composition of the new assembly but will also reflect the ongoing political dynamics in the region.
