Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024: National Conference, Congress Seal The Seat Sharing Deal
The Congress and National Conference have agreed to share Jammu and Kashmir's 90 Assembly seats for the upcoming election. The NC will contest 51 seats, while the Congress will run for 32. Two seats are reserved for the CPIM and Panthers Party. Despite this agreement, there will be a "friendly but disciplined contest" on five seats, showing that some differences remain unresolved.
This election marks the first Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir in ten years, following the central government's decision to revoke Article 370 and 35A, which led to the bifurcation of J&K into two union territories. The alliance between Congress and NC aims to counter forces attempting to divide the region.

Alliance Aims and Criticism
The BJP has criticised this alliance, accusing Congress of prioritising its interests over national unity. In response, the NC has reaffirmed its dedication to restoring statehood for J&K and securing special rights for its permanent residents.
The first phase of the election is set for September 18. This collaboration between Congress and NC is seen as a strategic move to strengthen their position against opposing forces in the region.
Election Dynamics
While the primary focus is on seat-sharing, both parties acknowledge that some differences persist. The "friendly but disciplined contest" on five seats highlights these unresolved issues. However, they remain united in their broader goal of fighting divisive forces.
The alliance's formation comes at a crucial time, with significant political changes having taken place in Jammu and Kashmir over the past decade. The removal of Article 370 and 35A has been a pivotal moment, reshaping the region's political landscape.
Commitment to Statehood
The NC's commitment to restoring statehood for&K is a key aspect of their campaign. They aim to ensure that permanent residents regain their special rights, which were affected by the abrogation of Article 370.
This election is not just about winning seats but also about addressing broader issues affecting Jammu and Kashmir's future. Both parties are keen on presenting a united front against those who seek to create divisions within the region.
The collaboration between Congress and NC reflects their shared vision for Jammu and Kashmir's future. By joining forces, they hope to present a strong opposition to any attempts at dividing the region further.
As voters prepare for the first phase on September 18, this alliance will play a significant role in shaping the electoral landscape. The outcome will determine how effectively these parties can work together despite their differences.
