Jammu Floods: Central Government Deploys Team to Assess Damage from Recent Rains

The Central government has dispatched an inter-ministerial team to Jammu to evaluate the impact of recent floods and landslides. The team will conduct on-ground assessments over four days and report back on the extent of damage.

An inter-ministerial team from the Central government is set to visit flood-affected areas in Jammu over the next four days. Their mission is to evaluate the damage caused by recent rains. This decision was made during a high-level meeting led by Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar and National Disaster Management Authority Joint Secretary Col Kirti Pratap Singh.

The meeting focused on assessing the impact of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in Jammu. The team will conduct thorough inspections of the affected districts to gauge the extent of losses. A detailed report will be submitted to the Government of India following these visits, according to a government spokesperson.

Central Team's Composition and Responsibilities

The Central team includes officials from various ministries such as Road Transport and Highways, Power, Rural Development, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Jal Shakti, and Finance. During the meeting, a PowerPoint presentation highlighted damages to private property, public infrastructure, and loss of lives. The Divisional Commissioner informed the team about the affected areas and damage to essential infrastructure like roads and power supply.

Efforts to save lives with support from security forces, emergency responders, National Disaster Response Force, Union Territory Disaster Response Force, Police, Army, and Central Armed Police Forces were also discussed. The officials addressed challenges posed by continuous rains, flash floods, and landslides. They deliberated on restoring roads, power infrastructure, and water supply systems.

Preparedness Measures in Kashmir

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired another high-level meeting to review preparedness for the emerging flood situation in Kashmir. He assessed essential services like health, power, and telecom across the Valley. Dulloo emphasised ensuring an uninterrupted supply of food grains, cooking gas, and fuel to the public.

He instructed deputy commissioners to identify vulnerable areas for precautionary evacuation if necessary. The chief secretary highlighted the importance of maintaining close contact with the public and providing timely assistance. These measures aim to mitigate risks associated with adverse weather conditions.

The inter-ministerial team's findings will help shape future response strategies for natural disasters in Jammu. Their report will provide valuable insights into improving infrastructure resilience and disaster management efforts in the region.
