Jammu And Kashmir Faces Serious Health Crisis Amid Mysterious Illness Outbreak, 3 Airlifted In Rajouri

In Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, the village of Baddal is grappling with a mysterious illness. The district administration has responded by establishing three containment zones and sealing off the area. This action follows the deaths of 17 individuals since December 7, all exhibiting fever and breathing difficulties.

Recently, three more people were airlifted in Rajouri sector, including minor siblings, were admitted to Government Medical College Hospital in Rajouri. Aijaz Ahmed was among them, arriving on Tuesday, while the sisters were hospitalised on Wednesday. Aijaz has been transferred to PGIMER in Chandigarh for further treatment.

Containment Measures and Health Monitoring

The administration has implemented containment zones to curb any potential spread of infection. "Containment Zone 1" includes affected families whose homes are now sealed, with entry restricted to authorised personnel. "Containment Zone 2" targets families identified as close contacts, requiring their immediate relocation to GMC Rajouri for health monitoring.

"Containment Zone 3" encompasses other households in Baddal village. Over two dozen residents have been placed in isolation wards at GMC Rajouri for continuous health checks. The administration is also distributing food and water thrice daily to prevent further infections.

Investigation into the Cause

The cause of these deaths remains uncertain. An inter-ministerial team suggested pesticide contamination in a nearby water reservoir might be responsible. However, local authorities have not confirmed a direct link between the water source and the fatalities.

All victims belong to three related families, intensifying concerns about the outbreak's nature. The district administration has banned public and private gatherings within containment zones to minimise risks.

Government Response

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Baddal recently to reassure residents that efforts are underway to address the situation actively. "A central team is working diligently to uncover the reasons behind this unfortunate loss of life," he stated.
