Among the 26 constituencies where voting will occur are Kangan (ST), Ganderbal, Hazratbal, Khanyar, Habbakadal, Lal Chowk, Channapora, Zadibal, Eidgah, Central Shalteng, Budgam, Beerwah, Khansahib, Chrar-i-Sharief, Chadoora, Gulabgarh (ST), Reasi, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Kalakote - Sunderbani, Nowshera, Rajouri (ST), Budhal (ST), Thannamandi (ST), Surankote (ST), Poonch Haveli, and Mendhar (ST). The polls will open at 7 am and conclude at 6 pm, ensuring voters have ample opportunity to cast their ballots.

Intensified Security Measures

Security measures have been notably enhanced in all six districts where the elections are taking place, with a particular focus on ensuring the safety of voters. The necessity for heightened security is underscored by the recent surge in terror activities, especially in the districts of Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch, which have experienced multiple terror attacks in the last three years. The most devastating of these was an attack on a bus carrying pilgrims in Reasi, resulting in nine fatalities. The security framework is also designed to address potential threats along the Line of Control (LoC), with strategies in place to mitigate risks, including cross-border shelling, though the likelihood of such incidents has decreased due to an ongoing ceasefire.

Candidates and Constituencies in Focus

The election will see 239 candidates vying for a seat across the 26 identified assembly segments. This phase is critical for several key players, including former chief minister Omar Abdullah, who is contesting from Ganderbal and Budgam, and Tariq Hamid Karra, JKPCC president, who is in the race for Central Shalteng. Additionally, J-K BJP chief Ravinder Raina is aiming to retain his seat in Nowshera, Rajouri, a constituency he has represented since 2014. The outcomes of these contests will be keenly observed, given the prominence of the candidates and the strategic importance of their respective constituencies.

Security personnel have been deployed in substantial numbers to safeguard polling booths, particularly those in proximity to the LoC, highlighting the authorities' commitment to conducting a secure election. The focus on safety is paramount, given that 11 of the assembly segments are situated in hill districts that have historically been more susceptible to attacks. These measures are part of a broader effort to ensure that the electoral process is not disrupted by violence, allowing voters to exercise their franchise without fear.

The impending assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir hold significant political weight, with the second phase set to determine the future direction of the Union Territory. The elections come at a time when security concerns are at the forefront, due to recent terror attacks in some of the districts going to the polls. Despite these challenges, the authorities have made extensive preparations to ensure a smooth and secure voting process. The participation of key political figures and the strategic importance of the constituencies up for grabs add to the gravity of this electoral phase. As voters prepare to cast their ballots, the hope for a peaceful election process and a step towards stability in Jammu and Kashmir remains high.
