Jammu and Kashmir Administration Suspends DSP Sunil Singh After Alleged Assault on JKAS Officer

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil Singh after he allegedly assaulted JKAS officer Azhar Khan during a traffic dispute. The incident occurred amid ongoing by-elections, prompting public outcry and political criticism.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sunil Singh. This action follows an alleged incident involving a JKAS officer and a dispute over traffic violations. The altercation occurred during the ongoing by-election in the Nagrota Assembly segment, where JKAS officer Azhar Khan was serving as transport in-charge.

Azhar Khan, who is also a Block Development Officer, was reportedly involved in a confrontation with DSP Singh. The incident took place in the Gandhinagar area when Khan's vehicle, driven on the wrong side, collided with a van, causing traffic congestion. A video allegedly shows DSP Singh slapping Khan during this altercation.

Immediate Suspension and Transfer

Following public and political backlash, DSP Singh was transferred. "In terms of Rule 311 of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Services Classification Control & Appeal Rules, 1956 and pending enquiry in the matter, Sunil Singh, DSP, the then Sub-Divisional Police Officer SDPO Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, is hereby placed under suspension, with immediate effect," stated Principal Secretary to the government, Home Department, Chandraker Bharti.

During his suspension period, Singh will remain attached to the police headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir. Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat ordered his immediate transfer on Monday. DySP Kuljit Singh has been appointed as SDPO Gandhi Nagar, Jammu.

Public Reaction and Further Developments

The incident sparked widespread condemnation from various quarters. The Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Services Association demanded action against DSP Singh. However, a longer video surfaced showing Khan hitting a van while driving on the wrong side. This footage led to criticism of Khan as well.

Social media users have called for accountability from both officers involved in the incident. The situation highlights ongoing concerns about traffic rule enforcement and conduct among public officials in Jammu and Kashmir.

The administration's swift response underscores its commitment to maintaining order and addressing misconduct within its ranks. As investigations continue, both officers face scrutiny over their actions during the altercation.
