External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar Discusses Global Relations in Asianet Interview
In an interview with Malayalam news channel Asianet, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed his views on the relationship between Asia, Africa, and the West. He made it clear that he believes there is a need to move away from viewing the West as 'the bad guy'. The minister was in Thiruvananthapuram for the launch of PM Vishwakarma scheme.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has recently expressed his thoughts on the perception of Western countries in relation to their economic impact on Asia and Africa. Speaking during an interview with Malayalam news channel Asianet, Jaishankar stated that it was time to move beyond the dated viewpoint of viewing the West as 'the bad guy' in terms of flooding these markets with goods.

The minister was present in Thiruvananthapuram for the launch of the PM Vishwakarma scheme when he made these remarks. His comments come at a time when there has been increased discussion about global trade dynamics and how they impact developing nations.
Not Batting for The West
In his conversation with former Indian diplomat T P Sreenivasan who interviewed him for the channel, Jaishankar clarified that his statement should not be interpreted as him advocating for Western countries. Instead, he emphasized that it is not only Western nations which are responsible for flooding Asian and African markets with goods on a massive scale.
"I think we need to get over the syndrome of the past that the West is 'the bad guy' and on the other side are developing countries," said Jaishankar. He further added, "The world is more complicated; problems are much more complicated than that."
A Complex Global Scenario
This perspective offered by Jaishankar draws attention towards understanding international relations from a nuanced standpoint rather than resorting to black-and-white dichotomies such as developed versus developing or East versus West. It underscores how intricacies exist within global politics and economies which require careful analysis instead of oversimplified assumptions based on historical narratives.
G20 Summit Attendance Speculations
Besides discussing trade dynamics, another topic touched upon during this interview was Chinese President Xi Jinping's absence from the G20 summit in New Delhi. When asked if this was due to China not wanting India to be seen as a leader of the Global South, Jaishankar responded by stating that such reasons were open for speculation.
This statement indicates how international diplomacy involves intricate decision-making processes which may often be influenced by multiple factors. It also highlights how interpretations of these decisions can vary based on different perspectives.
In conclusion, Minister S Jaishankar's recent comments during his interview with Asianet have shed light on some critical aspects of international relations and global trade dynamics. His views encourage a shift away from viewing world affairs through narrow lenses and instead promote an understanding that accounts for the complexities inherent within these domains. At the same time, his remarks about the speculated reasons behind President Xi Jinping's non-attendance at the G20 Summit underline how diplomatic actions are subject to various interpretations and conjectures.
