Shopian Encounter: 3 terrorists killed, operation underway

Two soldiers were killed and three others were injured in a gun battle with the terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian area on Saturday evening. Five soldiers were injured in the gun battle out of which two succumbed to their injuries at an Army Base Hospital, said reports.

Three terrorists were shot down by security personnel and a counter-operation is currently underway.

The two army soldiers who lost their lives during the encounter has been identified as Sepoy Ilayaraja P and Sepoy Gowai Sumedh Waman.

The exchange of fire began after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Awneera village when they suspected terrorist activity. As the security forces were conducting searches, the militants opened fire on them.

According to J&K DGP SP Vaid said that one terrorist was eliminated while the other two still hiding in adjoining house.

Vaid said,''There was information about militants in Shopian, while cordon was being laid, security personnel came under fire.''

On Wednesday, three terrorists have been killed in an encounter at Tral in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. The Army along with the Jammu and Kashmir police had launched the operation following a search operation that was conducted on the basis of intelligence input

On the same day (August 9), the Army confirmed the killing of 5 terrorists in Kashmir's Machil sector. The Army also confirmed that they had recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition and also ration, medicines with Pakistani markings.

On July 23, an infiltration attempt was foiled by the Army in the very same area. This year, the Army has foiled a total of 22 infiltration bids along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir
