A Chinese-made assault rifle scope has been recovered close to the National Investigation Agency headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir, triggering a police search in the wider Jammu region and the detention of a 24-year-old man in Samba district, officials said.

The device, which can also be fitted to a sniper rifle, was traced to the Sidhra area after officers learnt that a six-year-old child in Asrarabad had been seen playing with it, according to police accounts of the sequence of events.

The child’s parents told officials that the scope had been picked up from a nearby garbage dump earlier in the morning, prompting police teams to fan out across Sidhra and surrounding localities to check for any related material or possible security risks.

Senior officers visited the site where the Chinese-made attachment was spotted and supervised the search, while a person from Samba district was detained for questioning over the recovery, news agency PTI reported, citing police sources familiar with the case.

A police spokesperson said, "Jammu (Rural) Police recovered a telescope (that can be mounted on a weapon) from the Sidhra area," and confirmed that the Special Operations Group was working with local police units to understand how the equipment reached the neighbourhood.

The same spokesperson added that "The public is advised not to panic," stressing that the search and investigation into the Chinese assault rifle scope find were continuing, and that any suspicious objects or movements should be reported to nearby stations without delay.

Chinese assault rifle scope case and separate Samba custody

In a separate development in Samba district, police took into custody a person identified as Tanvir Ahmad after officers allegedly noticed a "Pakistani" phone number saved on a mobile handset, according to officials who linked this action to routine security checks in the border region.

Officials said Tanvir Ahmad comes from Anantnag in south Kashmir and now lives in Samba, while investigators continue to examine both the Chinese assault rifle scope incident and the phone number lead, treating them as separate matters within ongoing security surveillance.
