Major General Narula further said that on Monday they had heard some firing inside the EDI. We cordoned off the area and the operation began. It was a tricky operation as it was a huge building. Further we did not want any collateral damage, the officer also said.

He also said that there was a chance of civilians being inside. First all those persons were taken out. The operation took some time because the building has 60 rooms and 60 bathrooms. We had to ensure that there was no collateral damage he also added.

This is the second time since February that this building has been attacked. In the last attack, five security personnel had died.

The terrorists had initially planned on carrying out a strike on the Srinagar highway before entering the city and blowing themselves up in a crowded place. That plan was however foiled due to intelligence inputs.

The terrorists however managed to access a portion of the EDI. Officials said that the army took its time in this operation. It wanted the terrorists to exhaust ammunition.
