We extend our gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone, and urge all those who haven't filed ITR for AY 2023-24, to file their ITR at the earliest to avoid last minute rush,'' read the tweet.

The tax department has issued a reminder to those who have not yet filed their Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year 2023-24, urging them to do so at the earliest to avoid a last-minute rush.

No extension of the deadline for filing ITR

The government has clarified that there will be no extension of the deadline for filing ITR beyond July 31. Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra emphasized the importance of timely filing and expressed optimism that the number of filings would surpass the previous year. He thanked income tax return filers for their prompt response and advised them not to wait until the last moment or expect any deadline extensions.

In response to concerns about inoperative PANs due to non-linking with Aadhaar, the Income Tax Department specified that Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and foreign citizens should submit proof of their residential status to their jurisdictional assessing officer. This step will enable the operationalization of their PANs. NRIs with inoperative PANs are requested to inform their respective JAOs and provide supporting documents to update their residential status in the PAN database.
