Italian political party Lega Nord under ED lens in AgustaWestland case

New Delhi, June 30: Lega Nord is a political party in Italy. This party has come under the lens of the investigators probing the AgustaWestland case.

A payment of Rs 90.08 crore made to this political party has now come under the scanner of the probe agencies.

The Enforcement Directorate has sought details from Italy regarding the case relating to this political party which was allegedly paid kickbacks by a Finmeccanica official. It has been alleged that the kickbacks were paid to gain access to the authorities in Italy.

The role of an Italian political party under the scanner:
Lord Nega is alleged to have been paid a whopping Rs 90.08 crore by Giuseppe Orsi, the former Managing Director of Finmeccanica. It has been alleged that this payment was made so that a way could be found to work around the deal and signing the same with India.

The ED has sought more details on this issue from Italy. The ED is hopeful that details would be shared soon and this would also lead to more information. When asked if there is any India connection with Lega Nord, officials say that they are awaiting details from Italy.

Investigators say that the payment was made to Lega Nord directly Orsi. Finmeccanica, the parent firm of AgustaWestland in Italy is alleged to have made this payment to gain access to the authorities in Italy in a bid to ensure that the deal was clinched with India.
