IT professional arrested for blackmailing US woman

Kolkata, Feb 16: An IT professional here has been arrested for allegedly blackmailing a US citizen by using her intimate pictures, police said today.

Avinash Gupta, an engineer in a renowned IT company, was arrested by the Cyber Crime section of Kolkata Police from his Mukundnagar home for sending "intimate" photographs of his and the complainant woman's to her husband through email and then trying to "blackmail" her, a senior officer said.

Gupta, in his mid-thirties, and the complainant were known to each other and they developed a relationship when the woman visited the city last October, he said. Gupta, as per the complaint, allegedly started mailing some intimate photographs to her husband after their relationship deteriorated, the officer said.

The lady lodged a complaint a couple of months back and Gupta was arrested on Sunday following the probe into the matter, he said, adding Gupta has been booked under several sections of the I-T Act.
