ISRO Achieves Successful Second Docking of SpaDeX Satellites with Future Experiments Planned
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful second docking of satellites in its Spadex missions. Union Minister Jitendra Singh announced this accomplishment on Monday, highlighting that more experiments are scheduled in the coming weeks. "Glad to inform that the second docking of satellites has been accomplished successfully," Singh stated in a post on X.

ISRO detailed that the second docking experiment involved the SPADEX satellites SDX-01 and SDX-02, which was completed on April 20 at 8:20 pm. The following day, power transfer between the two satellites was successfully conducted. This involved operating a heater element in one satellite using power from the other, lasting about four minutes.
SPADEX Mission's Progress
The SPADEX mission, launched by PSLV-C60 on December 30, 2024, is a cost-effective technology demonstrator for in-space docking using small spacecraft. The first successful docking occurred on January 16, followed by undocking on March 13. These experiments are crucial for ISRO's future missions, including the Bharatiya Antariksh Station and lunar astronaut landings.
In the second docking attempt, full autonomy was achieved from an inter-satellite distance of 15 metres until docking. This contrasts with the first attempt, where a manual hold point was used at a distance of 3 metres. The space agency noted that this autonomous docking marks a significant milestone in the SPADEX mission.
Future Experiments and Implications
ISRO plans further experiments over the next two weeks to build on these successes. The SPADEX mission's achievements are vital for future missions requiring multiple rocket launches to meet shared objectives. These developments enhance ISRO's capabilities in space exploration and technology.
The second docking experiment was preceded by extensive ground simulations and on-orbit trials. These preparations incorporated lessons from previous docking and undocking attempts, boosting confidence for this demonstration. The successful execution of these tasks underscores ISRO's growing expertise in autonomous space operations.
