ISRO's 100th Launch: NVS-02 Satellite Powers Up India’s NavIC For Precision Navigation!
In a remarkable achievement, the Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO) successfully launched its 100th rocket from Sriharikota, marking a significant milestone in India's space exploration history. On January 29, 2025, ISRO successfully deployed the second-generation navigation satellite, NVS-02, into geosynchronous transfer orbit using the GSLV-F15 rocket.
The rocket lifted off from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 6:23 AM. Approximately 19 minutes after liftoff, the GSLV-F15 successfully placed the NVS-02 satellite into a 322.93 km geosynchronous transfer orbit.

Enhanced Navigation Capabilities with NVS-02
NVS-02 is a crucial addition to India's regional satellite navigation system, NavIC. The satellite will replace IRNSS-1E and enhance the NavIC base layer constellation. This next-generation satellite incorporates a combination of indigenous and procured atomic clocks, ensuring precise timing and accurate position information for users across India and surrounding regions.
The heart of NVS-02's navigation payload is the Rubidium Atomic Frequency Standard (RAFS), a robust atomic clock that provides a stable frequency reference for the satellite's navigation signals. The satellite is equipped with navigation payloads across multiple frequency bands, including L1, L5, and S-band, alongside a ranging payload in C-band. These features will significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of NavIC services.
Boosting India's NavIC Constellation
NavIC, India's independent regional navigation satellite system, provides precise positioning, velocity, and timing services within India and extends to areas approximately 1,500 km beyond the Indian border. It offers two types of services: Standard Positioning Service (SPS) with position accuracy better than 20 meters, and Restricted Service (RS) with enhanced security features for authorized users.
With the successful launch of NVS-02, ISRO has further strengthened its satellite constellation. The NVS series of satellites, including NVS-01, NVS-02, and the upcoming NVS-03, NVS-04, and NVS-05, will ensure continuity of services and offer enhanced features for navigation across terrestrial, aerial, and maritime sectors.
Celebrating ISRO's Achievements
ISRO's 100th launch from Sriharikota is a testament to the organization's progress and commitment to advancing India's space capabilities. Over the years, ISRO has launched six generations of rockets and placed over 548 satellites into orbit, including notable missions such as the Chandrayaan lunar missions, Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), Aditya-L1, and a record 104 satellites in a single mission.
According to ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan, these milestones reflect the organization's growing capabilities and vision. He expressed confidence that ISRO would achieve its 200th launch sooner, propelled by a vibrant ecosystem of research and innovation.
Key Applications of NavIC
The NavIC system is crucial for a variety of applications including strategic operations, terrestrial and maritime navigation, precision agriculture, geodetic surveying, fleet management, and mobile location-based services. It also plays a key role in satellite orbit determination, IoT-based applications, emergency services, and global timing services.
The continued development of the NavIC constellation, bolstered by the addition of the NVS series, underscores ISRO's vision to provide reliable and accurate navigation services, enhancing both national security and everyday applications for citizens.
