Iran Invites Kharge, Salman Khurshid, Pawan Khera To Attend Ayatollah Khamenei's Funeral

Iran has invited senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, and Congress media and publicity department head Pawan Khera, to attend the burial ceremonies of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The ceremonies are scheduled to take place across multiple cities in Iran between July 3 and July 9.

Indian Delegation Yet To Be Finalised

Alongside the invitations sent to Congress leaders, India is also expected to send an official delegation to the funeral ceremonies. According to reports, Bihar Governor Lt. General Syed Ata Hasnain (Retd) and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita are likely to lead the delegation.

However, the final composition of the Indian team has not yet been confirmed.

PM Modi Invited But Overseas Tour May Prevent Visit

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a recent conversation between the two leaders.

While Modi was invited to participate in the burial-related events, he is unlikely to travel to Iran due to his scheduled visits to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from July 6 to July 11.

Funeral Ceremonies Across Three Iranian Cities

The burial-related events will begin on July 3 and continue until July 9, with Tehran hosting several official ceremonies. Religious events will also be held in the holy city of Qom.

The final burial of Ayatollah Khamenei is set to take place in Mashhad, one of Iran's most significant pilgrimage centres located in the country's northeast.

Khamenei Was Killed In February

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28, 2026, at the age of 86. He died during a large-scale, coordinated joint airstrike carried out by the United States and Israel.

The strike targeted his official compound in central Tehran, resulting in the death of the longtime Iranian leader.
